African-American business pioneer Joan Johnson ‘made a path where none exists’

The trailblazing co-founder of one of the country’s most successful black-owned companies and advocate for women has died in Chicago at the age of 89. Joan Johnson, who started hair-care company Johnson Products with her husband, George Johnson, in 1954, was known as shrewd and smart businesswoman and grande dame with an impeccable sense of style. Johnson and her husband grew a $250 investment and turned it into a multi-million-dollar company which became the first black-owned company to be traded on the American Stock Exchange (now known as NYSE American), per CNN.
