The Movie Biz: Films to remind you that natural disasters are no laughing matter

Think of the whole disaster-movie genre, especially as it flourished in the 1970s. You remember those ads for “Earthquake,” “Avalanche” and “The Poseidon Adventure?” The titular natural catastrophe would be suggested (preferably luridly) on the poster and paraded across the bottom would be the faces of famous, semi-famous and fading stars, some of who would survive said catastrophe, some of whom wouldn’t (You could usually bet on Charlton Heston or Gene Hackman being around until the final credits).  Most disaster movies have a built-in cheese factor. Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (“Das Boot”), the film may do waves better than human emotions, but it’s still, in its way, enthralling.  “The Impossible” (2012) — Distributed by Warner Brothers Nothing CGI could possibly match the terrifying real footage of the Indian Ocean tsunami that smashed into Thailand in 2004, but the movie nonetheless gives us a pretty darn scary approximation of the chaos, horror and mayhem.
