China’s tech groups slow to transform supermarket sector

Freshippo is an unconventional supermarket. Owned by Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba, Freshippo’s 150 outlets in China are pioneers of what Jack Ma, Alibaba’s chairman, calls “new retail” — merging brick and mortar stores with ecommerce, data collection and artificial intelligence.
