Dominant Disney couldn’t save bummer summer box office

The Walt Disney Co. had a great summer at the domestic box office, with three movie releases in the top five, plus considerable holdover business from “Avengers: Endgame.” Summer ticket sales overall, however, were down 2 percent from last year to $4.3 billion from the first Friday in May through Labor Day weekend, per Box Office Mojo, thanks to some tentpole sequels that failed to live up to their predecessors and underperformers in Disney’s own recently acquired Fox unit. “The Lion King,” “Toy Story 4” and “Aladdin” all grossed more than a billion dollars at the global box office for Disney (NYSE: DIS) and dominated the domestic top five alongside “Avengers: Endgame,” which delivered $384 million of its $858 million North American box office during the summer after opening on April 26.
