In light of recent escalation in the trade war with China, Trump had said that it is “fine” if the negotiations planned for September are called off.
“We’ll see whether or not we keep our meeting in September,” Trump said “If we don’t, that’s fine.”
Trump announced a new round of tariffs on Chinese imports to take effect Sept. 1, effectively eliminating previous negotiations with President Xi Jinping weeks earlier and countered on trade and currency policy that risk fueling a wider divide among China and the U.S.
As of now the meeting for September still is on the table.
This counters what President Trump had stated in July “The problem with them waiting … is that if & when I win, the deal that they get will be much tougher than what we are negotiating now … or no deal at all,”
Trump said Friday “We’re doing very well with China,” . “We’re talking to China. We’re not ready to make a deal but we’ll see what happens.”
